Models, Markets, and Mania: How AI Is Destroying The Hobby [And How It Can Save Us]

Justin Hinh

AI isn't the "new kid" in numismatics; it’s been failing here since the 1990s, leaving behind a trail of dead companies and ignored patents. While the current hype fixates on technical hurdles, the real barrier to AI grading is a collision of market dynamics and a growing "trust gap" fueled by clickbait apps and bad data. We’re cutting through that noise to show exactly where AI can actually solve problems for the hobby instead of just creating more.

3:00 PM

Congressional Gold Medals: Intersection of Art and History

Lawrence S. Brown, Jr., MD, MPH

For over 250 years, Congressional Gold Medals have been among the most powerful and enduring ways our nation tells stories of extraordinary service, sacrifice, and historical significance. Focusing on the Harlem Hellfighters of World War I and the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion of World War II, this presentation highlights how CGMs honor courage and achievement in the face of discrimination and delayed recognition.

4:00 PM

5:00 PM

The Semiquincentennial Coins: What’s Going Right... and What’s Going Wrong

Dennis Tucker

The 2026 Semiquincentennial coins are bringing new excitement to the hobby. They’ve also ignited a firestorm of controversy. This behind-the-scenes history tells how the program developed, the direction it was headed in for several years, how the system went off the rails, and what it all means for American numismatics.

A Century Later: Reanalyzing a Byzantine Gold Coin Hoard in the Wulfing Collection

Jeremy Haag & Elena Baldi

John Max Wulfing, a prominent St. Louis businessman and numismatist, purchased a hoard of 80 Byzantine gold coins dating to the reign of Manuel I (1143-1180 AD) and published his study of the hoard in the February 1926 issue of the Numismatist. A century later Jeremy Haag has performed archival research uncovering previously unpublished details about the hoard’s 1925 acquisition and accession into the Wulfing Collection at Washington University in St. Louis. Elena Baldi has meanwhile performed extensive die studies revealing legend and die variants found in the hoard, die links, and insights into how these ‘schyphate’ coins were produced, evidencing the use of two separate half dies, particularly for the manufacture of the obverse.

12:00 PM

Chicago Coin Club Meeting

This meeting of the Chicago Coin Club is open to anyone to attend! As part of the meeting, Tom Uram will be speaking about morse code on money.

Eric P. Newman and The Fantastic 1804 Dollar

Len Augsburger & Joel Orosz

In the early 1960s, Eric P. Newman became fascinated with the 1804 dollar, the so-called "King of American Coins." The origin of the coin was completely unknown, and yet they traded for incredible sums. Newman, along with Ken Bressett, sought to relate the true story of these coins once and for all. This presentation traces their path as they created numismatic history and wrote what is now the standard reference on the subject.

3:00 PM

The Tokens of A. M. Abrahams, Santa Fe Trail Outfitter

Robert D. Leonard Jr.

In the early to mid-1850s, tokens marked "M. A." Abrahams were issued, labeled as from Independence and also Weston, Missouri. The story of this remarkable man, for a time an outfitter and shipper on the Santa Fe Trail, will be presented--and the strange die sinking errors on his tokens revealed and explained.
